The museums: Accademia Carrara and GAMeC

In a picturesque hamlet at the foot of the Upper City lies Bergamo's art hub.

Among the ancient cobblestone streets where you can browse the windows of art galleries or craft stores and historic buildings with elegant courtyards is Piazza Giacomo Carrara, where the Accademia Carrara and GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea – are located.

Carrara Academy

Now recognized among Italy's leading museums, the Carrara Academy was founded in 1796 on the initiative of Count Giacomo Carrara.
It collects and preserves 1,800 works including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and precious nuclei of decorative arts. The exhibition itinerary of the picture gallery offers a five-century journey through the history of Italian art from the Renaissance to the 19th century.

Opposite the Accademia Carrara, in a dialogue between past, present and future, stands GAMeC, the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.

GAMeC - Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art

In a 19th-century monastery, 1,500 square meters of exhibition space, a visual arts workshop has a permanent collection that includes works by authors such as Balla, Boccioni, Kandinsky and Manzù and hosts temporary exhibitions by international artists and experimental projects.
