Caravaggio - Sanctuary Santa Maria del Fonte

The best-known shrine in the Bergamo area and one of the most visited in Italy is Caravaggio, in the heart of the plain.

Description

Discover the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Fonte, a place of pilgrimage and a treasure trove of art. With works by Juvara, Cavenaghi, Moriggia and Cavedoni, the shrine welcomes more than two million visitors a year. Through a tree-lined avenue, pilgrims come to this sacred place, where they can draw miraculous water from the Sacred Fountain.

Art and architecture

Dated from the 15th century and rebuilt in the 17th-18th centuries by Pellegrino Tibaldi, it is the destination of fervent pilgrimages, particularly on May 26, the anniversary of the miraculous apparition. The interior contains works by Juvara, Cavenaghi, Moriggia and Cavedoni.

Pilgrimage

More than two million pilgrims converge there each year, and at the end of the long prospect of a wide tree-lined avenue, they are greeted by a grandiose building erected on the site where, in 1432, a young woman saw Our Lady; at the same time, a spring of clear water began to flow from the ground.

The Sacred Fountain

The focus of attention is still the Sacred Spring, located under the high altar, from which pilgrims draw; the spring also feeds two large pools in the entrance plaza, surrounded by porticoes where visitors stop.
