The Cannoniera di San Giovanni<\/strong> is a hidden gem that showcases the military history of Bergamo<\/strong> during Venetian rule. A casemate<\/strong> located along the Venetian Walls<\/strong><\/a>, in the Upper Town<\/a><\/strong>, this fascinating structure is easy to find near its namesake bastion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Accessing the cannoniera is an experience in itself: a metal staircase leads to the ancient maneuvering square, opening up a world of historical and military architecture. The structure consists of two large vaulted rooms designed to house cannons through square openings in the interior walls. Interestingly, these cannons were never used as the fortress was never besieged.<\/p>\n In 2007, a major restoration project brought this historical site back to life by removing 1800 cubic meters of accumulated soil. Since 2009, the cannoniera has been open to the public, complete with informative panels detailing its history and significance.<\/p>\n Above the cannoniera lies a modern sundial<\/strong> that captures visitors’ attention with its sleek design and functionality. This steel structure on a stone base combines contemporary aesthetics with ancient utility by marking legal time, solar time, and even the cardinal directions. Its curved shapes and shiny material exemplify how history can seamlessly blend with
