Preserved in the name Bergamo is the origin of its history: a mountain (Berg) on which stands a house (heim).
Surrounded by the Pre-Alps, the hilltop town was a Celtic encampment before the arrival of the Romans in 49 B.C., when it became a municipality. Over the centuries, this strategic natural stronghold, which today is a terrace surrounded by greenery, saw the succession of Lombards and Franks, until the time of the Communes, when it began to transform itself into the medieval jewel that we can still admire today. <\/h4>\n

After the period of rule by the Viscontis of Milan<\/strong>, Bergamo became thelast outpost<\/strong> in the west of the Republic of Venice, the Serenissima<\/strong>, for which the valiant Bergamasque condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni<\/strong> also fought. After a lion’s share in the Risorgimento, the city became part of the Kingdom of Italy and later of the Italian Republic.
